Discussion:
Meeting with Mr. Brady

The meeting with the library went well, although there were many "turns" I
wasn't expecting.

They have some extra PCs, that might be better than the one we were going to
donate.

John and I identified a key area that Linux and Free software could do the
most benefit. The children's area on the top floor. They only have one game
per computer. Showing Mr. Brady Edubuntu and the massive amount of games
it comes with for free, returned a very positive response. I will be in
contact with the Librarian in charge of those computers when she returns
from vacation. At that time, we will most likely deploy 4 Linux Edubuntu
computers.

The biggest problem is that we can't give any computers not running the SAM
(account manager) access to the Internet. That's why the Macs currently
don't have Internet. Luckily Edubuntu comes with enough games to keep young
minds entertained. Unfortunately, the same is not true for the rest of the
library. I thought this would be a good first step, anyway.

Regarding Firefox and OpenOffice.org being deployed on the computers we got
another positive response, with a negative twist. Apparently the library
started out with Firefox deployed, but people complained. We decided to run
a course teaching Firefox and OpenOffice.org in one lab. If they continue
to be used afterwards than we can deploy them across all the library.

So, basically this is a call for help for the following:

- Anyone with knowledge of how we could get SAM working on Linux
- Anyone who wants to teach (or team teach) Firefox and OpenOffice

I might have forgot something....
Thank you,
Bryan Quigley

I'll volunteer my time trying to figure out SAM (security accounts manager).

It just looks like you can set up with encrypted samba passwords and life is
good, at least, I hope...

That should cover sharing files/printers but how does that somehow cover
getting access to the internet?

Sorry, apparently I missed two important points. The SAM thing's primary
need is to limit the time people can get on the computer, and to delegate
more time to Cherry Hill residents. They charge for printing as well.

Second point, is we can start creating check-out-able things now. What
media do we have that we can donate, I remember OpenOffice, what else?
Non-burnt CDs are preferable.

I thought it was all tied in, if you're authenticed via SAM you get access to
the service...

Did you ask why?
I'm willing to be they didn't have plugins (like, wretch, flash) installed.
Set it up, get a IE-style theme, and people won't have a clue what they're
using, only that it works.

I'll volunteer for some OOo presentations, I'm pretty good at impress right
now....and I've been wanting to give back to the community somehow and oru
school district doesn't seem to like volunteers...

I'll volunteer for some OOo presentations, ...
Include me in there too; I know OOo Writer best, but could do any of the
apps in a pinch.

I would suggest that perhaps the most needed browser instruction is to
cover "safe browsing" in general, and possibly a separate class focusing
on FF.

The tide is shifting quite strongly now, as the MS universe begins to
implement some meaningful security: the bad guys are re-focusing to
target the /user/ rather than the system, and there's not an OS in
existence that will protect a clueless user from a savvy criminal.
